Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning. {goodreads.com}

My Review:

Let me start off by saying that I have always been fascinated with the Amish, and their culture. I read anything I can find on them, watch all the documentaries (and the not so documentary ones, i.e. Breaking Amish), and visit my in-laws who live right outside Amish country whenever I can:

So as soon as I saw one of my fellow bloggers post The Hallowed Ones on one of their TTT posts, I knew I had to read it as soon as possible!

This is not your typical vampire book. There are no Lestats, Edwards, or even any Spikes in this story. These vampires are the vampires of true nightmare, a creation of the collective. The vampires that only appear in historical folklore, that gave us the fables and memories of vampires that history has warned us about. They are red-eyed, spider-like and pure evil.

Katie, the main character, is completely likable and relatable. She is a young Amish woman who is awaiting her Rumspringa, her time to find herself, when all hell breaks loose. Being that she, and her settlement, are Amish they are not aware at first as to what is happening to the outside. But once they find out, the Amish do what they do best, they close their doors and look away.

But Katie, cannot withstand letting go of her future, and what is happening on the outside. She is a very strong woman who cannot stand by while the Elders make decisions that affect an entire populace, she believes that they need to be told what is going on and that they need to do everything in their power to destroy the vampires.

If you are looking for a never before take on vampires and dystopia then look no further. Grab this novel, a cup of coffee and keep the lights on because this story will truly frighten you.
